Dear Grantsville Citizens,

In light of recent events and the current push for police reform, I want to assure you of the Police Department’s commitment to ethical principles as we strive to provide a firm but fair and consistent service to our community.  We take seriously our oaths to defend the Constitution of the United States of America and the State of Utah.  Though we receive guidance from and enforce laws enacted by elected officials, we do not swear allegiance to a political figure or a political party.  The Constitution always takes precedence.   We have assembled an outstanding group of officers.  We do not claim to be perfect yet but we are making progress.  We strive to  "never act officiously or permit personal feelings, prejudices, political beliefs, aspirations, animosities or friendships to influence [our] decisions. With no compromise for crime and with relentless prosecution of criminals, [we] will enforce the law courteously and appropriately without fear or favor, malice or ill will, never employing unnecessary force or violence and never accepting gratuities.  [We] recognize the badge of [our] office as a symbol of public faith, and [we] accept it as a public trust to be held so long as [we are] true to the ethics of police service (Law Enforcement Code of Ethics)."   Our officers face difficult circumstances often.  The job is emotionally draining and physically taxing and the things that you deal with  change you.  The officers (and their families) sacrifice often on your behalf.   They and their families are my heroes.  They are deserving of your respect.  They need your understanding and support.  Please continue to cheer them on.  After all, we are all in this together.  As Robert Peele, known as the father of modern policing, put it, “the police are the public and the public are the police, the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence.”   We love serving in Grantsville.  Thank you for your support and for making Grantsville a wonderful place to be a police officer.

Honored to be your Chief,

Chief Robert Sager
